The start of the school year is a busy and exciting time.  Traffic increases during this time of year due to school buses, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Parents need to take precautions to make sure their children get to school and back home safely.

Drivers:
o Obey speed limits and traffic signs.
o Don’t use electronic devices while driving.
o Illinois Law requires vehicles stop (not just yield) for pedestrians at crosswalks.

Pedestrians:
o Children need to use crosswalks when crossing the street, as they are easier to spot, and some crosswalks are patrolled by a crossing guard.
o Reflective & bright colored clothing can help a child be seen.
o Bicycle helmets greatly reduce the risk of death or debilitating head injury.
o Cell phones can be a great convenience and safety tool for children; however, they often distract a child while walking.  Remind your child stay off the phone, keep their head up, make eye contact with drivers, and be aware of potential hazards.

Winnetka Police strictly enforce School Zone Speed Limits, Sign Restrictions and Cell Phone Laws.
