Village of Winnetka
Land use planning is a function of municipal government that provides a mechanism for orderly and desirable development as well as preservation of existing desirable physical elements of the Village.
In addition to the traditional Building Department functions, the Department of Community Development is also responsible for land use planning, subdivisions, annexations, re-zonings, site plan review and review of development proposals. Business development, historic preservation, and housing are specific areas of land use planning that are addressed by the Village through various commissions, programs, and staff activities.
The Village Comprehensive Plan, WINNETKA 2020, was drafted by the Winnetka Plan Commission and adopted by the Village Board of Trustees in 1999 and is intended to serve as the principal policy document to guide the location of future land uses within Winnetka’s planning area and to act as the basis for resource management decisions by Village officials. The Plan is general and advisory. It is not a regulatory document designed to control the precise form of development on individual lots, a function that is performed by various Village regulations including the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, but it does provide a context in which regulatory changes can be made.
Title 15 of the Village Code regulates planning and platting including subdividing and consolidating property. Such requests are reviewed for recommendation by the Plan Commission. Click here for the subdivision/consolidation application.
