Tree Lighting on Friday, December 1 at 5:30 PM at Station Park

Usher in the holiday season, Friday December 1, at 5:30 pm with the annual Winnetka Tree Lighting at Station Park, 754 Elm Street – across Green Bay Road from Village Hall. There will be a visitor from the North Pole and festive carolers in Victorian costumes to lead the singing, after the lighting ceremony. There won’t be a visit with the Grinch at the Book Stall… the Grinch is stuck in Whoville. Our town is safe with Mr. and Mrs. Claus!

Curbside Leaf Collection Extended to Tuesday, December 5

Winnetka’s annual curbside leaf collection program will run until Tuesday, December 5. Under this program, residents may rake their leaves to the parkway just inside the edge of the curb for collection by the Village. Please do not rake leaves into the streets. This creates a hazard, as leaves are slippery when wet; and also can clog storm sewers, leading to flooded streets and yards.

The Public Works Department is closed on Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017. A holiday schedule for refuse and recycling collection will be in place the week of November 20th.

2017 Landmark Preservation Award Winners

The awards presentation took place at the November 7, 2017, Village Council meeting. The Preservation Awards program honors construction projects in the Village that help preserve the history and character of Winnetka.

Kidde Recalls Fire Extinguishers with Plastic Handles

This recall involves two styles of Kidde fire extinguishers: plastic handle fire extinguishers and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers. The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.

Electronic Recycling Program to go on Hiatus Starting Thursday, November 16

Winnetka’s electronic recycling contractor, COM2 Recycling, will discontinue electronic recycling over the winter months. The current program (Thursdays from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the Public Works Yards, 1390 Willow Road) will end on Thursday, November 16. The program is expected to resume in April, 2018.

Dispose of Unused Prescription Medications and Sharps at Fire Department

The Winnetka Fire Department participates in the Residential Prescription Drug & Sharps Disposal Program. Home prescription medications and used insulin syringes may be dropped off at the Fire Department Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Please note that the Fire Department cannot accept narcotics.
