Since discussions about delivering flood relief to residents began in earnest back in 2011, the Village has relied heavily on community input and suggestions while striving toward a workable solution. The Village has used numerous methods to engage and inform residents including;
hosting open houses and study sessions,
sharing regular stormwater plan updates at Village Council meetings,
issuing special newsletters and email updates,
keeping residents apprised of current, ongoing projects to alleviate flooding in many neighborhoods, and
launching this website to serve as a clearinghouse for all stormwater plan-related materials.
In October, the Village hired Strand Associates, an engineering firm with a proven track record of finding creative stormwater solutions for its clients, to help identify potential flood risk reduction solutions primarily in western and southwestern Winnetka. Strand Associates was selected in part based on its commitment to engaging the community. The firm will help the Village implement a proactive public outreach strategy to ensure that its work incorporates ideas, input and suggestions from members of the community, environmental stakeholders, other agencies and government decision makers.
In the coming months, the Village will be asking for your input once again as it begins to explore alternative solutions to deliver relief to neighborhoods most impacted by flooding.
