After 16 years of service as Winnetka’s Community Development Director, Mike D’Onofrio has announced his plans to retire. He anticipates his last day will be in June, 2017.
Mr. D’Onofrio started his career as a Dane County, Wisconsin Housing Specialist and later worked as a Planner for the Cook County Department of Planning & Development in Chicago. He came to Winnetka after serving for 12 years in the Village of Des Plaines, first as a Development Specialist and then as Director of Community Development. While in Des Plaines, Mr. D’Onofrio administered a downtown façade improvement program, managed a $20 million downtown redevelopment project and assisted in the development and implementation of a streetscape program.
Mr. D’Onofrio’s first task upon joining the Village of Winnetka was to reorganize the Community Development Department by establishing processes to track paperwork, installing automated building permit tracking systems and improving the technical skills and job performance of Department staff. He also served as staff liaison to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Business Community Development Commission, ad hoc Post Office Redevelopment Committee, Urban Land Institute’s Technical Assistance Program and Downtown Master Plan Steering Committee. In 2005, Mr. D’Onofrio was invited to become a member of Lambda Alpha International, a prestigious land economics professional society.
During his tenure in Winnetka, Mr. D’Onofrio was responsible for updating the Village’s building codes, assisting in the development of the Streetscape Program and in drafting the Planned Development regulations; he also oversaw the drafting of updates to the Village’s land use and zoning regulations, and revisions to provisions dealing with the Retail Overlay District. Most recently, he served as project manager for the Village Hall Rehabilitation project, and assisted with the development of Winnetka’s first-ever Downtown Master Plan, and facilitated the preliminary approval process for the One Winnetka redevelopment project in the Elm Street Business District.
“We are grateful for the leadership and contributions Mike has provided over the past 16 years,” said Village Manager Rob Bahan. “While we wish him well, he will be missed on our team.”
Throughout his career, Mr. D’Onofrio worked with numerous residential, commercial and industrial developers to guide them through the municipal development approval building permit processes. The Village invites the community to join in congratulating Mr. D’Onofrio and wishing him future success in his post-retirement endeavors.
