Emergency Preparedness

It is critical that everyone is prepared for an emergency. This includes making plans ahead of time, knowing signs to watch for, and making sure your family is aware of how to react. Ready.gov can assist you in the planning process.

Outdoor Weather Warning Siren SystemTornado Siren

Winnetka’s three emergency warning sirens are at the following locations:

  • East of the Public Safety Building at 410 Green Bay Road
  • Northeast corner of Tower and Green Bay Roads
  • Park District Golf Course

All three are tested for three minutes at 10 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

When Village of Winnetka staff members become aware that the National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for our area (usually within 10 miles of the Village), the audible outdoor warning siren system will be activated. These sirens are activated to alert persons who are outside that they need to move to proper indoor shelter immediately.

If there is a tornado warning, do not call the Winnetka Fire or Police Departments. Instead, take cover in your predetermined shelter. Stay there until the danger has passed.

Family Preparedness

Remember, sometimes emergencies are so immense that responders cannot immediately assist you or your family. It is your responsibility to prepare yourself by:

  • Being trained in first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Building emergency kits
  • Making a plan
  • Making sure everyone in the family knows the plan
