Dispose of Unwanted/Unused Drugs on 9/26 at the Police Department, 410 Green Bay Road

September 24, 2015 04:00 PM

It's a great time to clean out your medicine cabinet!  The Winnetka Police Department is once again participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.  The goal of the program is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs.  Simply drop off expired or unused prescription drugs at the Police Department, 410 Green Bay Road, on September 26 between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, no questions asked.

Properly disposing of your unwanted and expired medicines protects kids, families and the environment.  Medicines in the home are a leading cause of accidental poisoning, and rates of prescription drug abuse are alarmingly high – over half of teens who abuse prescription medications get them from a family member or friend, including the home medicine cabinet.  In addition, flushed or trashed medicines can end up polluting our waters.

If you miss the event on September 26, you have options.  The Winnetka Fire Department, in partnership with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) accepts expired/unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs weekdays during normal business hours.  You may use a marker to cover the patient’s name (we will do it for you if the name is still present). However, the name of the medication and dose needs to remain on the container.  The only medications not accepted are narcotics and other controlled substances.

SHARPS Disposal Program – In addition to collecting expired/unused medications, the Fire Department also provides a “SHARPS” Disposal Service, also in conjunction with SWANCC.  Weekdays during normal business hours, the Department accepts containers of needles, syringes and diabetic finger prick cartridges.  Sharps Containers are also offered for the storage of these needles at home.  When this container is full, bring it to the Fire Station and exchange it for a new one.  Please use the prescribed containers instead of coffee cans or other containers not intended for the storage of sharps.  Doing so will avoid injuries to staff that handle the containers.  NO commercial or institutional waste is accepted.
