Solar Energy

The overall objective is to reduce energy consumption and advance the use of renewable energy sources in Winnetka. Village-owned buildings are regularly undergo LED lighting upgrades and are equipped with motion sensors for lighting. The Village is an active member of the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA) and utilizes available funding through IMEA’s Energy Efficiency Upgrade rebate program. The Village offers a rebate program to residents for the installation of NEST thermostats. The Village also recognizes residents and businesses in the community that show an exceptional commitment to sustainability practices through its annual Green Awards program.

SolSmart

The Village of Winnetka is currently participating in the SolSmart program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative, which helps local governments reduce barriers to solar energy growth and makes it easier for homes and businesses to go solar. The Village of Winnetka is committing to earn SolSmart designation and will work to improve solar market conditions, making it faster, easier, and more affordable for our residents, businesses, and other organizations to install solar energy systems. The Village has dedicated staff and efforts to work wih the SolSmart team and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (MMC) to achieve SolSmart designation by July 2019.

Winnetka formally supports the folowing solar goals and will work to achieve them both in our own community and with collaboration throughout the region. These high-level goals are:

  1. Advance renewable energy
  2. Enact policies that support clean energy
  3. Engage the community in clen energy practices

Village Energy Initiatives

The Village takes part in several other energy-efficient initiatives, such as:

  • Use of Energy Star Appliances
  • Use of CFL light bulbs/motion sensors in municipal yards facilities
  • Purchase of a Hybrid Ford Escape used by Engineering Division
  • No Idling Policy for Village trucks and equipment

Home Energy Calculator

An interactive energy efficiency website allows homeowners the opportunity to identify cost saving recommendations.  The home energy calculator is available on the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency's website at www.imea.org/EECalculator. The site has reference information, educational material on energy for children as well as the interactive tool for determining energy savings.
