Residents, especially those with Lake Michigan coastal properties, are encouraged to attend a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Open House on Thursday, September 26, from 5-7 PM. The Open House will give the community an opportunity to review preliminary versions of a Flood Insurance Study report and resulting Flood Insurance Rate Map.


Village of Glencoe to Discuss Possible Cannabis Dispensary Location in Hubbard Woods on October 7

The Village of Glencoe’s zoning commission will be holding a public hearing on the sale of recreational cannabison October 7, 2019 at 7:30 PM at Glencoe’s Village Hall (675 Village Court).

Streetscape Water Service Interruption

The Streetscape project includes the installation of a short section of new water main on Chestnut Street, between Elm Street and Chestnut Court.


North Shore Triathlon Road Closures

The North Shore Triathlon special event, approved earlier this year by the Village of Winnetka will be taking place on Sunday, September 15, 2019. The event will include swimming, biking and running components mainly held in Wilmette, but will pass through parts of Kenilworth and Winnetka.


Cannabis Public Hearing September 17

On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at 7 PM, the Winnetka Village Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing in the Village Hall Council Chamber at (510 Green Bay Road) for the purpose of considering amendments to the Zoning Ordinance concerning zoning regulations for cannabis-related businesses.


Provident and Spruce Water Service Interruption

On Friday, August 2, 2019, water service on Provident and Spruce will be turned off in order for the Water & Electric Department to replace a valve on the water distribution system. Upon restoration of water service, a boil order is required as a precautionary measure for at least 18 hours following the construction work. The service interruption is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM and the work is anticipated to take 4 hours.


Property Tax Assessment Appeal Seminar for New Trier Township August 21

Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak will be holding a property tax assessment appeal seminar in New Trier Township for taxpayers seeking to appeal their 2019 property tax assessments. The seminar is co-hosted by New Trier Township Assessor Jan Churchwell, Winnetka Village President Chris Rintz, and Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin. The hour long session will educate taxpayers on how to file a successful tax appeal.


Labor Day Refuse/Recycling Schedule, Week of September 3 - 7

Regular Monday collections will be Tuesday. Regular Tuesday collections will be Wednesday. Thursday & Friday collections will be as usual.


Test of the Emergency Alert System August 7

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the FCC, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on August 7, 2019, at 1:20 PM CDT. The message will clearly state that the alert is only a test.


Approvals Repealed for One Winnetka Development Project

On August 6, 2019, Winnetka’s Village Council voted unanimously to repeal approvals for the One Winnetka development project due to the developer’s non-compliance with the development agreement and zoning approvals. The Village has also filed a complaint in court against the developer to compel action on numerous property maintenance issues.


Electric Department Performing Utility Wood Pole Inspections

The Water & Electric Department will be performing inspections of the wooden distribution poles of the Village’s overhead distribution system. Work is scheduled to begin on July 29 and last approximately 2 weeks.


Fire Hydrant Painting begins August 5

The Village of Winnetka maintains more than 625 fire hydrants throughout the Village and unincorporated service area, and will be painting approximately 144 of those hydrants in the following areas, beginning August 5: • Area south of Hawthorn Lane, east of the railroad and bounded by the lake • Area south of Mt. Pleasant Street, west of the railroad and east of Locust Road


New Trier Township Seeks Advisory Committee Volunteers

Wanted: Individuals interested in social services and the allocation of Township resources to local non-profit organizations serving Township residents.


Electric Department Performing Thermography Inspections of Lines & Equipment

The Water & Electric Department will be performing thermography inspections of the Village’s overhead power lines, distribution centers, switchgear and select transformer sites. Thermography is a non-destructive test method that may be used to detect poor connections, unbalanced loads, deteriorated insulation, or other potential problems. Work is scheduled to begin on July 17th and last approximately two weeks.


Water and Electric Department Survey on Cross Connections and Backflow Devices

The Water and Electric Department is distributing a survey via mail to residential and commercial water customers to update our records regarding cross connections and backflow devices that are connected to the Village’s potable water system. Please keep an eye out for the survey, completing it at your earliest convenience.


Stormwater Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with New Trier High School District 203 Moves Forward

The Village of Winnetka and New Trier District 203 have negotiated an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) authorizing the Village to utilize below-grade areas of Duke Childs Field for stormwater storage and conveyance related to flood control efforts in western and southwestern Winnetka. New Trier District 203 approved the IGA on June 10, followed by the Village on June 18.


Refuse/Recycling Collection Schedule for Independence Day Week

The refuse/recycling collections for the week of July 1, 2019 will be changed: regularly scheduled Monday and Tuesday collections will remain the same, regularly scheduled Thursday collections will be on Wednesday, and regularly scheduled Friday collections will be unchanged.


Run BeCAUSE Closes Part of Wilson Avenue Saturday, June 29

On Saturday June 29, a private charity “Run BeCAUSE” one mile run will be held using portions of the Green Bay Trail and Wilson Avenue. From approximately 8:30 am – 9:30 am, Wilson Avenue from Ash Street to Winnetka Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic.

Document Destruction Event Saturday, August 24 from 9:00 AM - Noon

Winnetka’s Document Destruction Event will be held Saturday, August 24 from 9:00 AM to Noon at the Public Works Yards, 1390 Willow Road. The goal of the program is to assist residents with recycling out-dated or sensitive documents. As a continuing program, the Solid Agency of Northern Cook Country (SWANCC) is providing a one-day document destruction event for residentially-generated paper.


Police-Fire Open House - Saturday, October 12 From 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

On Saturday, October 12, between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, the Winnetka Fire and Winnetka Police Departments will host their annual Open House, which coincides with the end of Fire Prevention Week. This well-attended event affords the opportunity to tour the headquarters of both Departments, view equipment demonstrations, and sit in public safety vehicles like fire engines and police cars.

Park District 5K Race Sunday, June 30 from 8:00 to 9:00 AM

Winnetka Police Department Does Not Solicit Funds

Over the summer, some residents may receive phone calls from organizations such as the Fraternal Order of Police, Metropolitan Alliance of Police, and others, soliciting donations. While members of the Winnetka Police Department may also be members of one of these organizations, the Winnetka Police Department does not authorize, nor does it want, any organization to solicit on its behalf.

Proposed Dog Park Community Engagement Meetings

The Winnetka Park District Board of Commissioners had a request from a citizens group to explore an off-leash dog park and at the January 10, 2019 Committee of the Whole meeting, the Park Board instructed staff to begin exploration of the possibility.


Water Department Performing Village-wide Leak Detection Program

ADS Environmental Services has been hired to perform leak detection services on the Village’s water system to identify and reduce unnecessary water loss. Starting May 20, technicians will survey approximately 72 miles of water mains and 4,500 water services to locate undetected water leaks.


Summer Fire Hydrant Flushing

Beginning Tuesday, May 28, the Fire Department will flow-test hydrants in Winnetka. Signs will be placed in the areas to be tested. During flow testing, sediment accumulations are removed from the water system. You may notice water discoloration for a brief period after a flow test in your area.


Service Line Protection Program Solicitation

The Village has been informed that a vendor is soliciting customers by mail to enroll in “Service Line Protection Program.” The mailing promotes a program in which customers enroll in the program and pay a monthly fee to cover potential water service line and sewer line issues. Prior to enrolling, customers are encouraged to understand the terms, conditions, and coverage of the program. Those with questions may contact the Water & Electric Department at 847-716-3558.

The Winnetka Park District and the Village of Winnetka invite residents to the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27. The Parade will begin at 10:00 AM on the corner of Glendale and Elm, and end with a ceremony at the Village Green. In case of rain, an indoor ceremony will be held in the auditorium at the Skokie School.

Villages of Glencoe and Winnetka Partner on Water System Analysis

The Village Boards of Glencoe and Winnetka have approved a joint water system analysis to explore possible opportunities for combining part or all of their water production and distribution systems. The feasibility study will be completed by engineering firm Strand Associates, which is familiar with both communities’ water distribution systems and treatment facilities.

Phosphorus Fertilizer Prohibition

To protect water quality by reducing phosphorus runoff, Winnetka bans the use of phosphorus-containing fertilizers. State law already prohibits the application of phosphorus-containing fertilizers by commercial applicators. The Village’s ordinance complements the state law, and allows exceptions for the Park District and residents when phosphorus doesn’t naturally occur at high enough levels or is otherwise low; and for newly sodded or seeded lawns.


Coal Tar Contractors Need a Permit

As residents begin to make improvements to their properties this spring, the Village would like to remind them of the ban of coal tar-based pavement sealants on all properties within Winnetka. Coal tar is a waste material generated during coal processing that contains high levels of chemical compounds shown to be harmful to aquatic live and pose a potential risk in humans.


Water Department Cross Connection Survey

In April, all water customers of the Village will receive the 2019 Cross Connection Survey from the Water Department. The State of Illinois and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency(IEPA) regulations require all public water system operators to implement and maintain a cross connection control program aimed at identifying and eliminating cross connection hazards.

Spring Cleanup is April 22- April 25

Winnetka’s Annual Spring Clean-Up week will be held April 22 thru April 25. Scheduled pickups are: Monday, April 22: north of Tower Road; Tuesday, April 23: Tower Road to Pine Street; Wednesday, April 24: Pine Street to Willow Road; Thursday, April 25: south of Willow Road. Items should be placed on residential parkways the evening before the scheduled pickup, or by 7:00 AM the day of the pickup, in order to minimize littering problems.


Summer Lawn Sprinkling Hours

As a user of Lake Michigan water, the Village is required to impose restrictions by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR); therefore, during the summer months, water restrictions are in effect. Lawn sprinkling is not allowed on consecutive days. Sprinkling is also prohibited between the hours of 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM The restricted sprinkling hours began on May 15, and are effective until September 15.

One Winnetka Update

In mid-October 2018, the Village Council approved the One Winnetka project at the southeast corner of Elm Street and Lincoln Avenue. The approval documents contain milestones the developer must meet. In December 2018, the developer exercised its options for a 90-day extension to close on the Conney’s property and record the final plat of subdivision for the development. Spring Tree Planting Program Deadline is April 5

The Village is taking requests for the parkway tree planting program on public streets. The Village plants 2” – 2 ½” trunk diameter parkway trees where voids exist, at no cost to residents. Larger trees are available, but residents are responsible for cost differences. Contact the Assistant Village Forester at 847-716-3289 to request an application, or more information. The deadline for spring tree requests is April 5. Plant a tree today for a greener tomorrow!

The Village tree service contractor is currently trimming parkway trees. The particular trimming areas at this time borders Asbury Avenue on the north side, Green Bay Road on the east side and Westmoor Road on the south side. All parkway trees will receive general trimming to improve tree structure for future growth.

The Village of Winnetka has three Trustees and a Village President on the ballot in this off-year election. All are running unopposed. Starting March 18, early voting and grace period voter registration will take place at Wilmette’s Centennial Ice Rink at 2300 Old Glenview Road on weekdays and Saturdays from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; and on Sundays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

Christmas Tree Pickup Ends January 18

Christmas trees will be picked up from the curbside for shredding, chipping, and composting through January 18, 2019. After January 18, a refuse sticker is required to ensure pickup. Please remove everything from trees, including plastic bags or wraps, ornaments, tinsel, wires, and the stand, as these will clog and damage the shredder.

Community is Welcome to Attend Flag Planting Event at Village Green

Part of this maintenance includes painting and sandblasting approximately every four years, to enhance their appearance and improve visibility of faded and weathered hydrants. In July and August, approximately 165 hydrants will be painted in the following areas: (i) North of Ash Street, east of the railroad and bounded by the Lake; and (ii) Spruce, Elm and Oak Streets from Hibbard to Green Bay Roads.

Electronic Recycling Program to Resume March 29

Since last November, the Village's electronic recycling program has been on hold. The program will resume March 29, 2018, at the Winnetka Public Works Yards, 1390 Willow Road. After March 29, household electronics will be accepted for recycling at the Public Works Yards every Thursday from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Village Budget Demonstrates Fiscal Responsibility and Stable Property Taxes

On Tuesday, December 5, the 2018 Annual Budget was approved by the Winnetka Village Council. The 2018 Budget is balanced; and operating expenditures are fully funded by operating revenues. Property taxes will remain level for the fourth year in a row. Village residents will see slight increases in their water, electric and sanitary sewer bills next year, and an increase in residential refuse collection fees from $10/month to $25/month. Most other fees and taxes remain unchanged.

The Village of Winnetka has won the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2017 budget document. The award represents a significant achievement for the Village, and reflects the commitment of the Village Council and staff to meet the highest principles of government budgeting. Less than 2% of almost 7,000 eligible entities in Illinois have won the 2017 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.


Fireworks Safety

With the 4th of July right around the corner, the Winnetka Police Department reminds residents to celebrate safely this year. The possession, sale, and discharge of fireworks are prohibited by the Winnetka Village Code (Section 8.08.110). This prohibition also includes sparklers, fountains, and sky lanterns. If you see an untrained individual using fireworks, keep your distance and contact the police department.


Important Information for Snow Removal Contractors

It is common practice for a snow removal service to push snow from its client property onto the parkway of the opposite side of the street. This process often leaves ridges of snow on previously cleared streets, creating hazards. In addition, the deposited snow is often a nuisance to the "receiving" side of the street, since potential property damage and reduced sight lines can result.


Winter Parking Restrictions

A “Snow Emergency” is declared by the Village when two or more inches of snow fall within a 24-hour period. Parking on residential streets is prohibited until the street is cleared of snow. Temporary signs will posted in the business districts before enforcement activity, but no signs will be placed in residential areas.
