Village to Provide Special Refuse Collections for Storm Debris

July 24, 2016 01:42 PM

The Village was impacted by a severe storm on July 23, causing widespread flooding. In order to assist affected residents in the cleanup and recovery process, the Village will provide curbside pickup of storm-related debris beginning Wednesday, July 27 and continuing for the remainder of the week. Collections will be free of charge from the curbside or parkway.

Although consumer electronics are prohibited from landfills, they may be placed at the curb and the Village will collect them separately for recycling.

Storm-damaged trees and branches will also be collected.

Landfill regulations prohibit the Village from collecting chemicals, liquids, or other hazardous waste -- please do not place these items at the curb, as they will not be collected.

During the evening of Saturday, July 23, a powerful thunderstorm impacted Winnetka and surrounding areas. Between 5:40 and 7:10 PM, in approximately 1 ½ hours, 2.75 inches of rain fell in Winnetka. This first wave of storms caused power outages and widespread flooding in the Village.  Another wave of strong storms in the late evening/early morning hours added an additional 2.4 inches of rain, for a total of just over 5 inches of rain from these combined events.

To assist the Village in making sure ongoing planning efforts bring relief to as many affect areas as possible, please send any photos, comments, or flooding descriptions to
