Winnetka MWRD Violation Notice

The Village of Winnetka failed to self-report a violation of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s (MWRD) mercury effluent standards. On April 24, 2018, a composite water sample showed a mercury concentration of 0.00279 mg/L which exceeds the permitted discharge limit of 0.001 mg/L. The water in question flowed from the sanitary sewer system to the MWRD treatment plant, so there was no direct mercury release to a waterway or the environment. The required monthly report was filed, but a second report notifying the MWRD of the discharge exceedance was not filed.

The violation was successfully resolved and follow-up testing has not indicated any further exceedances.  The failure to self-report resulted in a violation notice from the MWRD. The Village regrets its error and it will not occur in the future.
